4 Ways to Manage Stress in the New Year

Posted on

As the new year begins, you may want to make resolutions to help you lead a better lifestyle. This can include losing weight, reducing debt, or finding a new job. Perhaps, you have always handled stress badly, and would like to learn some new ways to cope with stress and anxiety. No matter what your resolutions are, these 4 ways to manage stress will aid you in reaching you New Year’s goals.

1. Remember to Laugh: In today’s hectic world, we often forget that sometimes the best medicine is to laugh and smile. Laughing promotes muscle relaxation and can reduce blood pressure. As you begin your new year, remember that you will feel more relaxed if you have a sense of humor, and don’t sweat the small stuff.

2. Ask for Help: Whether you are feeling overwhelmed at work or at home, it is always a good idea to ask for help where you can. By delegating tasks to family members or co-workers, you can reduce the burden on yourself, and help alleviate any stress you may feel about accomplishing tasks on time.

3. Designate Time for Yourself: While it is great to work on a team, or spend time with friends and family, the most important thing you can do to reduce stress is schedule “you” time. Spending time alone can help you relax and recharge. Consider making a weekly appointment with yourself to do something you enjoy like taking a walk, reading a book, or treating yourself to a lunch out.

4. Count to 10: A good rule of thumb during any conflict is to think before you speak. If a situation arises that has you feeling beyond stressed, always remember to count to 10, or 50, or even 100. Allow yourself the time to breathe and come up with a good way to handle the stress, rather than lashing out.

The New Year is a fresh start. Leave your stress and anxiety behind, and use these tips to cope with stress more effectively in 2017.
